Last week, we celebrated the artistic and musical talents of our students from all divisions of Mentor/TEAM in the annual Festival of the Arts! The event (the school’s 30th) featured performances from the various bands, ensembles, and choirs that have been learning and practicing their repertoire since the first day of school in September.
On Wednesday night, the focus was on the talented musicians and vocalists in the High School Division – with Grade 9 & 10 Concert Bands, HS Wind Ensemble, HS Jazz Band, HS Choir, and HS Senior Concert Band all turning in strong performances.
Thursday evening saw the Intermediate, Primary, and TEAM groups take to the stage. The Intermediate Band, Primary Choir, Grades 5 & 6 Guitar Clubs, TEAM Jazz Band, Grades 5/6 & 7/8 Choirs, TEAM Trashers, Intermediate Jazz Band performed to a full house – with the HS Jazz Band returning for a repeat performance.
Thank you to student MCs Dominic Sobotka (HS) and Michael Antoniadis, Chloe Attard, Dahlia Behiya, Iliana Rawlyk, & Romina Sedighy (Int) – who led the evenings with poise and humour.
Right alongside the musical portion of the May Festival were the visual arts components of the event. As part of the Intermediate Art Show, visitors took in the drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures created by Grades 5-8 students as well as the works of Grades 9-11 art students as they walked through the hallways and lobbies of the Main Campus.
The HS Senior Art Show – Paradise Lost – ran in the East Gym on both evenings. The exhibitors of the event were Grade 12 art students – led by curators Alisa Gamayunova and Rebecca Photopoulos. Visitors could bid on items – with all proceeds going to SKETCH – an organization in Toronto that creates opportunities for young people living homeless or marginalized to experience the transformative power of the arts.
While the school celebrated the 30th anniversary of this event, HS music teacher Mr. Hoare reached his own personal milestone – leading students through his 30th Festival of the Arts! Congratulations to Mr. Hoare and all Mentor/TEAM artists and performers on another great year!
