The following report was submitted by Grade 11 Mentor student Venessa Sectakof:
Hola, vamanos! Over this past March Break cuarenta (40) HS students along with tres (3) very patient teachers went to Spain to pursue soccer, tour band, or both. Our first stop was in Madrid where we met our wonderfully funny and knowledgeable tour guide, Jorge. He took us all around the ins and outs of Madrid with knowing charm – even getting all cuarenta y tres (43) of us into a museum for free. In Madrid, our tour band played for the students at King’s College School. It was a highly entertaining event and in the trivia quiz, one child in particular believed the capital of Canada was Panama. Our soccer teams played King’s with the boys getting a good taste of the Spanish skill level and the girls’ giving the Spaniards a football lesson in an 11-6 win.
En route to Barcelona, our next stop was Zaragoza. Here, we had the chance to enter the beautiful and majestic basilica. Our Barcelona hotel was situated in the heart of the city and Jorge took us everywhere possible (including to several paella meals). While in Barcelona, we witnessed the Barcelona marathon and some very dedicated Spanish Justin Bieber fans. We even joined 85,000 friends for an FC Barcelona soccer game; it was the highlight of the trip for many. Our tour band once again had a fantastic concert at Agora International School and our soccer teams played well, too. The boys improved over their Madrid showing with Alex Tolic scoring for the Marauders while the girls once again dominated their opponents. The schools agreed to a short 11-a-side co-ed match as well and Brianna Ananthan scored on one of the male keepers to earn a 1-1 tie. It was a sensational trip that will stay in our minds forever.
