Mentor/TEAM Presents $25,000 to CVH May 14 2010

Yesterday, Mentor College welcomed incoming president and CEO of Credit Valley Hospital, Kathy Hay, and coordinator of community programs Jennifer Boyko, to the school. The two guests met with Mr. Philbrook, Ms. Vendittelli, and Fashion Show student representatives. Ms. Hay and Ms. Boyko visited the school to acknowledge Mentor College/TEAM School for the school’s donations since the hospital opened. During the visit, the schools presented CVH with $25,000 - proceeds collected from the 2010 Fashion Show. They also invited the committee reps to visit the Maternal Centre for a hard-hat tour in June (after final examinations!) to see where the funds are being spent and to visit the Carlo Fidani Peel Regional Cancer Centre for a glimpse of how past donations have been spent. it will be a feel-good tour of a first-class facility that curretn head reps, Vanessa McGrath and Kavita Mahil, along with next year's head reps, Gillian Barker, Sofia Corbo, and Katrina Kairys are looking forward to seeing firsthand.

2010 Fashion Show Raises $46,000 For CVH & YWS April 23 2010

It is no wonder that the 2010 Mentor/TEAM Fashion Show sold out as fast as it did! This year’s show, the 14th installment of the annual event, raised the bar so high that guests were left wondering how the show could possibly get any better next year. According to one Mentor parent after the show, “This was just incredible! To think that the students could pull off something so…professional…makes me so proud to be associated with the school!”

Split into 4 acts and featuring both live and silent auctions, the show had models from the Primary, Intermediate, TEAM, and HS divisions modeling clothing provided by the various sponsors of the event. In the “Heads Will Roll” sequence, the audience even had the opportunity to witness some very local talent as Mentor’s very own designers, HS students, Natalie and Fifi, debuted their own line of clothing!

In addition to the first-class performances from runway models and dance groups, this year’s show featured some new elements. Among these were an outstanding gymnastics routine by HS students, Kathleen Brown and Jimena Lopez, plus an unbelievable magic show by Mentor’s own resident magician, Grade 11 student, David Li (stage name: “Lii Cow”).

It is easy to get caught up in all of the excitement of the evening and forget the main reason that the event takes place every year. Representatives from Youth Without Shelter and the Credit Valley Hospital were on hand to remind everyone about how the funds raised will help support each organization’s fundraising campaign.

In the end, the 2010 Fashion Show was a wonderful night in which members of the Mentor/TEAM community came together for a great cause! The total amount raised was $46,000 - with $25,000 going to Credit Valley Hospital and $21,000 going to Youth Without Shelter. Thank you very much to everybody who supported the event! Congratulations to head reps, Vanessa McGrath and Kavita Mahil, staff sponsor, Ms. Vendittelli, and the rest of the terrific team of students, teachers, and parents! Good luck to the head reps of the 2010-2011 show: Gillian Barker, Sofia Corbo, and Katrina Kairys!

7th Annual Celebration of Cultural Diversity March 1 2010

On February 25, the double gymnasium at the Main Campus was the site of the 7th Annual Mentor/TEAM Celebration of Cultural Diversity. Show MCs, Marissa Lee and Alex Fernandes, hosted the evening - which featured performances from students in all grades and divisions of Mentor and TEAM. The theme of this year's show was "Festivals Of The World."

From Tristan and Tycho Davies' wood-breaking Tae Kwon Do demonstration to a beautiful dance from the Intermediate Bollywood dance club, the evening was a truly magical celebration - ending with the TEAM School Chorus group's rendition of "We Are The World."

In addition to the spectacular concert, visitors enjoyed visiting 40 national pavilions - set up and managed by our High School students - containing artifacts, pictures, clothing, photos, audio/video, and of course samples of food and drink from the represented countries.

Congratulations to Grade 12 organizers, Julianne Wood, Fiona Wang, and Dillon Aykac! Thanks to your generosity at the door, $739.35 was raised - all of which will be given to the Canadian Red Cross as they continue to provide aid and relief in Haiti.

On Tuesday, November 24, Mentor/TEAM Fashion Show Committee Head Reps (Vanessa McGrath and Kavita Mahil), Junior Reps (Gillian Barker, Katrina Kairys and Sophia Corbo) and staff sponsors (Ms. Derventzis, Mr. Brewster, and Ms. Vendittelli) attended the Credit Valley Hospital Foundation The Roots of Our Community 2009 Tribute Luncheon. Kim Phuc Delivers Powerful Message Of Love And Forgiveness October 27 2009

A photograph of a young girl running down a road, her skin on fire with napalm, changed the way the world looked at the Vietnam War, and all wars. Known as the "girl in the picture", Kim Phuc spoke at the Mentor College Main Campus on October 27. Kim's presentation to Grades 8-12 Mentor/TEAM students was equally emotional, funny, and inspiring. Kim described her horrific experiences in the Vietnam War and spending 14 months in recovery in hospital (nearly dying several times). She also talked about her lack of freedom growing up in Vietnam and her brave and courageous defection to Canada. Having endured so much suffering in life, Kim's strongest point, however, was that forgiveness and love are more powerful than any weapon of war.

Having lived in Canada since 1992, Kim Phuc serves as a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO and works tirelessly in support of child victims of war around the world. Kim Phuc's speech was part of the Mentor College/TEAM School Speaker Series. Click here for more information about past speakers.

Edline: Mentor Launches Online Virtual Classroom September 11 2009

Mentor College is pleased to announce the launch of Edline - an online service used for school and class organization. The service allows the school to keep parents and students more informed about the academic and extra-curricular events within the school. Edline is aimed at enhancing communication between parents, students, and teachers.

At the JK - Grade 4 level, the student logs on to his or her own page - managed by the classroom teacher - and downloads activities, worksheets, and other items the teachers has posted for the class.

Grades 5 to 8 students can log on to their homeroom class page as well as view postings by their specialty teachers in French, Computers, Science, Physical Education, Music, and Art.

High School students access individual pages for each of the classes in which they are enrolled. Teachers post test review sheets, exam preparation guides, useful web links, and other resources of importance to the high school student.

The possibilities of learning are endless. We are excited about the launch of Edline and are sure that students and parents will find tremendous value in this powerful communication tool.
