Studying Canada’s Inuit People

Ms. Haney (HS teacher) and Jake Whyte (Mentor Grade 12 student) visited the Grade 2 classes to teach them about their volunteer experiences in Nunavut. The Grade 2s are studying Inuit peoples in Social Studies and were lucky enough to learn about homes, culture, education, and food in Northern Canada.

Ms. Haney did volunteer work with Mentor’s Habitat for Humanity Club while Jake Whyte participated in an exchange program through the YMCA.

Among some of the new information learned was: a box of Kraft Dinner costs over $5; people park their snowmobiles under the stilts of their home; tall trees do not grow there; mothers do throat-singing to calm their babies, and; windows in schools are small to keep the heat in.
