On Monday, Mentor/TEAM Grades 5 and 6 students had the privilege of attending a presentation for the award-winning author, Kenneth Oppel. He introduced the students to several of his novels, such as Airborn, Skybreaker, and Starclimber, and offered a sneak peek of one that has not been published yet!
The author showed the students many images of characters and settings that appear in his novel. He explained that he relies heavily on his imagination to create many of the circumstances in his stories, and this helps to make his books creative and fun to read. As well, he described for them the process of writing a book from start to finish. Students were shocked to learn that it takes many drafts of revision to complete one novel.
But most importantly, Kenneth Oppel sparked the interest of several students in Grade 5; Connor Rewa and Jaya Sarna both agreed that his presentation was “really interesting”. Evelyn Seebach said that now she really wants to “read more of his books”. Finally, Erin Lockett, who purchased a copy of Oppel’s novel, Half Brother, said that she “loved his presentation” and that she cannot wait to read Half Brother. So, overall, his visit to Mentor College was a huge success!
